Things to Keep in Mind when Designing an Accessible Kitchen

22 February 2009

The best way to get a functional kitchen is to design one from scratch for your needs. If you are lucky enough to be able to do this, the following are some things to keep in mind:

  • Lowered counter tops with space for rolling your wheelchair under it.
  • Wall mounted ovens with doors that open sideways instead of down.
  • Counter top stove with control buttons at the front.
  • Space to turn your wheelchair around (60 inches diameter, or 1.80m is the ideal minimum).
  • An upright freezer (have you ever looked for a hidden half opened bag of frozen peas in that old chest freezer?).
  • Sinks close to the stove, but still with some counter space between the two of them to rest pots, pans and bowls.
  • Limit the amount of shelves above the counter if you can't stand up.

  • Good lighting over each work area (sink, stove, etc)
  • Lots of power outlets, on the wall just above the counters or on the cupboard, just below the counter.
  • A U shaped kitchen is a good design where everything is within easy reach.

Nothing would be more tiresome than eating and drinking if God had not made them a pleasure as well as a necessity. Voltaire
