Nutella and Banana Sandwhiches, a pleasure going back to childhood.
14 March 2010

Nutella, glorious Nutella! I must admit, I am addicted to the stuff. I first discovered this chocolate & hazelnut spread when I was 5 or 6 years old, a long time ago, in Europe. I eat it in many ways. But what I seem to do the most often lately is in a sandwich, with bananas.

2 Nutella and banana sandwiches, almost finished.
Some of you might find the idea repulsive. That's fine, all the more for me! :) This is not a very refined foodie's delight. It is, most definitely, soul food. It tastes good, and also brings me back to an earlier, happier time. It brings me back to a time where I was a kid, without a care in the world.
This sandwich MUST be made with white bread. The kind that could double up as glazing putty in a pinch. It's got to be über fresh. If it isn't, then you must toast it. But only enough to create a bit of a brown crispy crust. The bread should still be soft inside :)
Layer Nutella, not too thick, but you need more than a thin spreading. Then take a banana, and slice it quite thinly. Place the slices evenly on the bread. The banana must be ripe - nice and sweet and smelling like a banana!
I sit and eat this sandwich, crusts first. I'm then left with the center of the sandwich, only soft bread. As I eat it, if I'm not careful, the bananas at the bottom of the sandwich slide out. It can make a mess. I always have a plate under it. Not so much to avoid the mess, but to ensure that if anything falls out, I can still eat it afterwards!
It is one of my pleasures in life. Not particularly healthy. But oh soooo good!

Oui, en effet, la brioche serait bien bonne. Mais la recette d'enfance, c'est avec le pain de mie commercial.

Dunno if it's unusual but when I was little and my parents were making me use rice cakes as a substitute for bread (I'm gluten free) I liked mashed banana and cheese on rice cakes (melted in the microwave).

Bananas and nutella are the best combination. Never tried it on bread, only on little sponge biscuits that are size of a banana slice. Combine it with a glass of cold milk and it doesn't get much better.
For some of us who grew up with nutella, peanut butter is repulsive. Nutella? Never.
The international house of pancakes (IHOP) in USA makes crepes with nutella, bananas and strawberries.
