Challenge Me - Suggest Ingredients

It's sometimes interesting to stretch one's cooking range, and a good way to do that is by using ingredients we don't use often. This challenge may give me a few good ideas.

7 February 2010

I want you to challenge me. Nothing too complex, I assure you, but I think you will like this. And one randomly selected challenger shall receive a wee thank you gift :)

Over the next week, you are invited to suggest 3 (three) different ingredients for me to use in a recipe. I will do my best to come up with an original recipe containing these three ingredients. Then the recipe will be posted on the site! One challenger will be sent the following 5 themed rubber duckies :)

Rubber duckies
The 5 themed rubber duckies going to the selected challenger!

Keep in mind that if you select ingredients that are too exotic, and I am unable to find them, I won't be able to complete your challenge. Similarly, if you select any crustaceans (such as shrimp, prawn, crab, lobster, scampi, etc), I won't be able to do it as I am allergic to the beasties.

To challenge me, simply post a comment to this post (see below), and give me the three ingredients you wish me to use.

One person will be selected randomly (slips of papers with name, picked out of a hat). Note that multiple comments/suggestions from the same person will not increase your chance to be selected to recieve the thank you gift :) Further note that if I don't have a valid email address to get in touch with you, I will have to draw another name. Finally, the person selected to receive the duckes may, or may not, be the person who suggested the challenge(s) selected to be used in (a) recipe(s)

So there you have it! Do your best :) You have until Sunday 14th February at 6pm UTC +13 (New Zealand time). The draw will be done and result announced within a week of the deadline.

  1. I'll kick it off with some vegan-themed ingredients ;-)

I challenge you to make a tasty meal with Beans, Tofu and Mushrooms.

  2. Excellent! Thank you :)

  3. Juniper berries, coffee & vanilla

  4. Ooooohh, juniper berries... All right. That should prove interesting. Considering I don't *like* coffee, it'll be even more so :) Thank you Amie

  5. duck, blackberries and spinach

  6. Chicken, peanut butter, pinapple.
A friend used to make something very tasty with these (and surely other) ingredients many years ago, used to call it "Chicken Coma"..

  7. @Pauline, thank you :) Sounds like a plan. Even have blackberries in the yard right now (if the birds left us any). Now to find duck! The last duck breasts I found were miserably small and thin :(

@Joe, ok, I can work with that. I'll have to make sure what I do isn't anything like the chicken coma :) Otherwise it's cheating :)

  8. Cranberries, orange and maple

  9. Tequila, barramundi, almonds.

Think that should stir it up a little.

  10. @Lawrence, unfortunately, can't get barramundi here.

  11. I once tried to combine bacon and ginger in a dish that is best forgotten. It was horrible. I am now convinced that there is no third ingredient that will make bacon go with ginger. Am I right? If yes, why does bacon not go with ginger?

  12. @emmajane I can't see why ginger wouldn't go with bacon. Might have to play!

Comments are now closed on this, as the deadline is past :) I'll be drawing a name for the duckies within the week :)
